Linda McCartney’s Country Pies

To be honest, I was a little sceptical about buying pies. Let’s face it, I haven’t been brought up with pies. We have “Boreks” to fill that gap in Turkish cuisine but sometimes I go for practicality. Just like saying “Yes.” to Linda McCartney’s pies last weekend. These are Country Pies. They are filled with soya mince and when you cut them there is this rich, brown onion gravy that oozes out.

Although they say vegetarian on the box, they are actually vegan. Four pies in the box and the whole thing weights 664g.

Here’s a few tips from my own experience:
• They take longer to cook if there is more than one pie on the same tray.
• Brush the pies up with soy milk before you bake them. Be generous with the amount of soy milk you are using.
• Take them out of their foil when they are still hot. And use pot holders while doing that.

There is another variety which is also vegan called Mushroom & Ale Pies. I haven’t tried those ones yet but you can get them from The Cruelty Free Shop. If you are buying Linda McCartney’s Pies from a health shop, keep in mind that Vegetarian Farmhouse Pies are not vegan.

Serving suggestion: They go nicely with fresh salads.

Wheat flour, water, rehydrated textured soya protein (14%), onion (9%), vegetable oil, savoury stock, cornflour, red wine, salt, tomato purée, garlic purée, thyme, malt extract, baking powder, flavouring, pepper.

Vegetable oil contains: Salt, emulsifier: mono and di-glycerides of fatty acids.

Flavouring contains: Dextrose, natural flavourings, maltodextrin, salt, acacia gum, vegetable oils.

Savoury stock contains: Potato, onion, salt, natural flavouring, vegetable oil, sugar, malt extract, yeast extract, pepper.

Baking powder contains: Disodium diphosphate, sodium hydrogen carbonate, wheat flour, salt.

Cooking Instructions:
Oven cook – From Frozen
Preheat oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6
Place the pie in its foil onto preheated baking tray in the middle of the oven. Cook for approximately 30 minutes until golden brown all over.

Fan oven – From Frozen
Preheat oven to 200°C/400°F/Gas Mark 6
Place the pie in its foil onto a preheated baking tray into the centre of the oven. Cook for approximately 25 minutes until golden brown all over.

Note: Two or more pies may require extra cooking time.
